SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSES BY GRADE
SDC English Language Arts (Grade K–6)
This course is designed for special education students to improve reading and writing skills. This preparation will include immersion in a district of residence approved reading program as well as appropriate literature. California Reading Standards covered include: Vocabulary and Concept Development, Concept about Print, Phonemic Awareness, Reading Comprehension, Listening and Speaking, and Literary Response and Analysis. Language Arts Content Standards covered include: Writing Strategies, Writing Applications, Spelling, and Grammar and Mechanics of Writing.
SDC Mathematics (Grade K–6)
This course is designed for special education students to learn and develop fundamental and life appropriate math skills. Number Sense, Algebra and Functions, Applications, Measurements and Geometry, Statistics and Probability, and Mathematical Reasoning.
The instruction for this course is delivered based upon individual bases needs.
SDC Science (Grade K–6)
This course is designed for special education students and utilizes appropriate curriculum materials. Physical Sciences which cover properties of material that can be observed, measured and predicted. Life Science of different types of plants and animals that inhabit the earth. Earth Science covers the earth, land, air and water. Investigation and experimentation is made by asking questions and conducting careful investigation.
SDC Social Studies (Grade K–6)
This course is designed for special education students and utilizes appropriate curriculum materials. Students are introduced to the geographic and historical connections between the world today and the world long ago. Emphasis is placed on World History and Geography, U.S. History and Geography and California History.
SDC Physical Education (Grade K–12)
This course is designed for special education students and utilizes appropriate curriculum materials. Course includes: movement skills and movement knowledge, self image and personal development, social development, team work to solve problems, emphasis on fitness, meeting challenges, interaction in competitive sports, working cooperatively to achieve a goal.
SDC English (Grade 7–12) Year
This course is designed for special education students to improve reading and writing skills and to prepare students to take the California High School Exit Exam. This preparation
will include immersion in a district of residence approved reading program as well as appropriate literature. California Reading Standards covered include: 1.0 Vocabulary
and Concept Development, 2.0 Reading Comprehension, and 3.0 Literary Response
and Analysis. Language Arts Content Standards covered include: 1.0 Writing Strategies,
2.0 Writing Applications, and 1.1 Grammar and Mechanics of Writing.
SDC Math (Grade 7–12) Year
This course is designed for special education students to learn and develop fundamental and life appropriate math skills. The emphasis will be on preparing students to take the California High School Exit Exam. Basic operations with whole numbers are reviewed. California Mathematics Standards covered include: Number Sense, Algebra and functions, Measurements and Geometry, Statistics and Probability, Mathematical Reasoning, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Prime and Composite numbers, and Common Multiples. Learned Concepts are applied to real life situations. The instruction for this course is delivered based upon individual bases needs.
SDC Science (Grade 7–12) Year
This course is designed for special education students and utilizes appropriate curriculum materials. One year earth science and one year biology course is taught. The following California Content Standards are covered: Earth Science: Plate Tectonics and Earth’s Structure, Astronomy, Oceanography, Geology, and Meteorology. The laws of motion
and force, elements and the periodic tables, the states and structure of matter, heat and electricity. Biology Science: Botany, Zoology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, the food chain, Ecology and ecosystems, and Cell Biology. All courses emphasize investigation
and experimentation.
SDC Social Studies (Grade 7–12) Semester
This course is designed for special education students and utilizes appropriate curriculum materials, literature, and resources. Geography is taught in each content area. The core curriculum of United States History (2 semesters), World History (2 semesters), U.S. Government (1 semester), and Consumer Economics/Career Education (1 semester) is taught each year. The entire required curriculum is covered over three years. For example: Year one – US History pre 1800, Year two – US History 1800-1900, Year three – US History 1900 to present. All topics will emphasize teaching to the California Content Standards in Social Studies.
TRI-LEVEL READING PROGRAM
Live Oak Canyon School recognizes the importance of a student’s reading skills. Research has shown that reading improves when students are given practice in reading decodable and connected text presented at their independent reading level. One of the programs utilized by Live Oak Canyon School is Language! A Literacy Intervention Curriculum. The program comprises three levels that provide systematic practice in the phonology, morphology, and syntax of English. Units of study provide sequential and cumulative tasks in Reading, Spelling, Writing, and English/Language Arts.
Student Mastery Books are used to check student accomplishment at each level.
